We went for a walk just as the sun was setting: the day had started out with flurries of snow and a hazy, gray, cloudy mist as backdrop. Then, the snow stopped and the sun came out, just enough to warm the day and to melt the snow a bit, so that when we stepped on the sidewalks the just-thawed snow froze again, slush turning to ice. We walked carefully, first up B----- street, and then turning onto a side street where the sidewalks were cleaner. We saw a man walking the tiniest of dogs, a woman with pushed up shoulders inside her parka, shrugged up against the cold, and a large car with an impatient driver who barely stopped before crossing the intersection. We wanted to walk more, but it was getting colder and colder and we expected R----- to come for dinner, so I said we should turn back, and so we did, we turned back and went up into the warmth of home, well-lit and comfortable, dressed up with red carnations that M----- had bought. They sit in a vase in the living room, just under the lamp, and match the red of the paintings on the other side of the room.
